What do we really learn in High School?

How to focus intently on a problem until it's solved. The benefit of postponing short-term satisfaction in exchange for long-term success. How to read critically. The power of being able to lead groups of peers without receiving clear delegated authority. An understanding of the extraordinary power of the scientific method, in just about any situation or endeavor. How to persuasively present ideas in multiple forms, especially in writing and before a group. Project management. Self-management and the management of ideas, projects and people. Personal finance. Understanding the truth about money and debt and leverage. An insatiable desire (and the ability) to learn more. Forever. Most of all, the self-reliance that comes from understanding that relentless hard work can be applied to solve problems worth solving

Hard work vs. Long work

I found this blog and thought it had some great insight; Long work is what the lawyer who bills 14 hours a day filling in forms does. Hard work is what the insightful litigator does when she synthesizes four disparate ideas and comes up with an argument that wins the case--in less than five minutes. Long work has a storied history. Farmers, hunters, factory workers... Always there was long work required to succeed. For generations, there was a huge benefit that came to those with the stamina and fortitude to do long work. Hard work is frightening. We shy away from hard work because inherent in hard work is risk. Hard work is hard because you might fail. You can't fail at long work, you merely show up. You fail at hard work when you don't make an emotional connection, or when you don't solve the problem or when you hesitate. I think it's worth noting that long work often sets the stage for hard work. If you show up enough and practice enough and learn enough, it's m...

Owning your own business

I graduated from college with a BS degree in Economics with a minor in Computer Programming. With this combination of knowledge I was able to find a job  as  a programmer for a financial company in Santa Monica. It was a great job but when I got opportunity to buy a catering business, I left the finance firm after one year and started to run this catering business called House of Catering. I was always the type of person who liked to be busy. So the idea of working long hours didn't bother me. And I thought it was the best way to make lots of money. The Pros to owning a business: You have the chance (but not the guarantee) to make a lot more money than you can make working for someone else. You'll be your own boss and make the decisions that are crucial to your business' success or failure. You may be the boss of other people. You'll have job security: no one can fire you. You'll have the chance to put your ideas into practice. You may participate in ...

Finding your First Job

For your first real job you will need to have your social security card and State Id or drivers license, to fill out the application. When you fill out the application you will be asked to fill out another form called the I9 (Employment Eligibility Verification), which will ask you if you are legally allowed to work in the United States. Your first job will most likely be working per hour. Currently the minimum wage in California is $8.00 per hour.  Underage work permit; Since you are under 18 years of age (a minor), many regulations apply to you. Typically, after an employer agrees to hire a minor, the minor obtains from his or her school a Department of Education form entitled " Statement of Intent to Employ Minor and Request for Work Permit ". The form must be completed by the minor and the employer and signed by the minor's parent or guardian and the employer. After returning the completed and signed form to the school, school officials may issue the permit to be e...
